Depressing conundrums!

Now here is an interesting paradox to solve. I have requested to become friends with various people, but no one has so far accepted. I am beginning to feel rejected crying  Its very depressing to open your pages and be confronted with the Friends portlet announcing "You have 0 Friends"!!!  I discovered that this is partly because the method I used (the Invitations portlet on the Add/More/Community menu) seems not to be for adding Friends, even though it has a link saying 'Invite Friends'. This invites peope to view your website which they then can't if they are not friends, and can't because I haven't written one! How do I know this? I got Nico to send me an invitation using this method. So apologies to everyone who received this curious message from me to view my webpage and then could not - sorry about that sad

I have also sent out Friend requests to various people clicking the Friend request button on their public page, including to Nico. However, when we looked at his account, we could not find anywhere a notification that I had requested to be a Friend and to Accept! frown

But here is the conundrum. since I have asked Nico to be my friend, it tells me this on his public page (Friend requested). He is yet to accept, but at the bottom of my page under Online Friends (for Chat purposes) he is listed (when he is online). How come he is listed as a Friend in one place but not in another, and how do you respond to a Friend request? Where do the notifications come?

Answers on a postcard to... Actually a reply below would be great smiley

Dear Paul ji,

Sorry for little late response. Yes you are partly correct. This intranet portal gives tremendous options about how to use it. So, many of us can be easily confused. For example many of us might not know what is "My public page" and "My private page". So, you got no response.

Basically to accept the friend request, I would like to suggest the following steps.
1. On the top right corner of the portal, we will see a "Go To" button. Clicking on it will expand it to show other sub-Menus.
2. On the sub-menus click on "My Private Page". So, that you will be directed to your private page.
3. Now from the left-top corner, click on "Add" button. A submenu will appear.
4. Click on "more" in the sub-menu.
5. A searchable list will appear. On the search box type "Request".
6. The search list will show something named Request. Just click on "add" button along side.
7. You will see a gadget appear in your page. Wait.....
8. Now in the same search list, search for "Friends", and add it too.
9. Now click on "x" button at the top of this search-list and the search list will disappear.

After doing all these 9 steps you will see two gadgets into your page, request and friends. Friends port-let will show you all friends who have accepted you. The request port-let will show some friend request which you have not yet responded. Respond to your friend request to add them to your friend list.

Now to go to the previous, public page, Click on UMN Logo at the top-left of the portal.

I hope it helps.

Lila Ram Sapkota.

Yeah! Woohoo!! Now I have got friends. Thanks Lila Ram-ji - your instructions were clear and helpful. Seems to me that the 'Add/More' menu is very important for maximising our use of the intranet. Wonder if this could be somehow communicated more to folk?
