OpenOffice training for Mugu cluster has been completed. With this training, we have finished final OpenOffice training for UMN. New staff at UMN will now onwards receive support materials like video and other tutorials in place of OpenOffice training.

Planning and budgeting for the year 2010-11 has been completed. We are planning to replace old assembled computer systems at Thapathali with new thin client devices. This will reduce capital and operational cost and contribute to environment-friendliness.

We will be sending support CD/DVDs to clusters regularly (every month) via mail or other medium. The CD/DVD media will contain updates and new versions of anti-virus, OpenOffice and other software necessary for the clusters.
ICT : victims, villains or heroes of climate change?

Victims
  • ICT activities affected by increasing number of severe weather events caused by Climate Change: especially network infrastructure
Villains
  • Producing Green House Gas emissions which add to global warming
Energy is used for ICT activities.
  • To power telecom networks, servers, routers
  • To heat and cool buildings
  • As petrol and diesel for generators for power backup
Heroes
  • ICT to reduce climate change in other industrial and domestic sectors
Reducing travel, through providing services such as:
  • Tele-and video-conferences
  • Teleworking/telecommuting
  • Internet services such as e-commerce, e-government and distance learning
  • Coming up with new ways, as yet undreamed of, to help other sectors minimise climate change emissions
Some of the things we are doing (as heroes)
  • Reducing our own carbon footprint : by using Virtualisation at Server level, Low power consuming netbooks and thin clients at the End User level
  • Influencing clients (other teams at UMN) and suppliers to reduce their footprints : by providing tools like energy & carbon calculator [ICT Beats February & March issues]
  • Exploring the possibility of using web-conferencing and other alternatives for meetings that require participants to travel extensively to reach the meeting venue
  • Enabling teams to save paper by communicating through email and sharing information through digital files
Change is the only permanent thing I feel between all the real time variables. Attempt to resist change is worthless as change is bound to keep happening.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has high linkage with change. It is in itself a vehicle for change.

Being in the transitional phase, a lot of changes are for sure in our country. The political system that has changed from the scenario of civil war to the peace making phase is somehow influenced by ICT. The digital media in the form of e-newsletters, web pages, television channels has been, and will continue to be, one of the major factors behind the political transformation.

ICT has narrowed physical distances round the globe and developed the culture of global village, where everyone is connected with each other. This has brought about cultural transformations, and these changes are now way of life.

Change brings improvement. It is the only way we can move on from the current situation to a better situation. Accepting change with positivity leads us to the prosperity of livelihood.

Change being unavoidable, we must build a capability within to cope with change. We must accept change with positivity, and, where possible, bring about changes that influence lives in the positive. It is always better to light a candle than to curse darkness.

There is always a hope for the betterment of life in every human cell. Let not this ray of hope die within us. Let our hunger for change and positivity remain.

I would like to thank the team of ICT Beats for the opportunity to share my thoughts over Integral Mission.

We cannot separate word and deed in Gospel ministry. Integral Mission (IM) depicts an understanding and doing of Christian Mission that involves both proclamation and demonstration of Gospel. IM actually begins with an individual's keeping right relationships with God, self, others and environment. Christian who loves God ever seeks to serve with poor and marginalized and thus contributes to poverty reduction in one way or other. Moreover, as Wikipedia tells, a commitment to IM is often reflected in particular concern for those living in poverty and a commitment to pursuing justice. Thus UMN's overall focus "addressing root causes of poverty" comes in line with the message of IM.

To name a few, Dalit women in Magma in Rukum now aware of health and hygiene, widows in Salle in Rukum getting empowered socially and economically, hundreds of small seed growing farmers' undergoing their institutional capacity building in Rukum, relief distribution to landslide victims in Doti, hundreds of women and children saved in Rupandehi, Mugu and Bajhang, advocacy to just distribution of water between Kumal and high caste in Dhading could be a small scenery that could be justified through the window of IM.

I am unable to login to UMN mail through my web-browser.
-Rupa Maharjan
The problem in logging in to UMN mail through web-browser may be because of three reasons. Please read below for the reasons and corresponding solutions.

Reason 1. You typed the URL incorrectly.
Examples of incorrect URL:
http://www.mail.umn.org.np
http://www.zmail.umn.org.np

To solve the problem, please type in the correct URL given below:
http://mail.umn.org.np
http://zmail.umn.org.np

Note: Your browser will add http:// automatically if you do not specify it yourself.

Reason 2. You typed the username incorrectly.
Example of incorrect username: hq/username

To solve the problem, please enter your username in any one of the two correct formats given below:
i. hq\username - Please note that the correct slash is back-slash (\) and not forward-slash (/)
ii. username@umn.org.np

Reason 3. You entered wrong password.
To solve the problem, please enter correct password. If you have forgotten your password, please contact Service Desk for help.

For example if your username is rupa, then you need to do the following to get access to our email system through web.
1. For Zimbra users:
a) Type zmail.umn.org.np in the address bar of your browser.
b) In the page that opens, enter your username and password as follows
username: rupa
password: ********
2. For non-Zimbra users:
a) Type mail.umn.org.np in the address bar of your browser.
b) In the dialog box that comes up, enter your username and password as follows
username: hq\rupa
password: *********
or
username: rupa@umn.org.np
password: **********

We hope this solves your problem.
During the Learning Review, we identified and solved problems of clusters' laptops and printers. Upgrading of Kaspersky and Nod32 anti-virus and OpenOffice 3.2 has also been done in clusters' laptops. Following new installations of Kaspersky anti-virus have been completed - 4 licenses for Bajang cluster, 3 licenses for Sunsari cluster, 6 licenses for Doti cluster and 1 license for Rukum cluster.

We have sent Samsung ML-1710 printer to Doti as a back-up printer and a new Canon all-in-one printer to Bajhang. HP Officejet 7210 has been maintained and sent to Mugu. We have sent one extra UPS to Doti.
